Learn about ADAPTIL Diffuser

How does it work?

ADAPTIL Diffuser releases these pheromones to help dogs feel reassured and relaxed in all challenging situations.

How fast will I see results?

A lot of dog owners start to see results within the first 7 days with their dog.
However, every dog is unique. Depending on how long the signs have been present and how severe the signs may be, it may take longer to see effects. We recommend using ADAPTIL Diffuser for at least one month.

How long should I use it?

Many dogs will benefit from the permanent use of ADAPTIL Diffuser to create a reassuring environment in your home. The minimum recommended duration is one month.

When to use?

  • To comfort your dog at home constantly
  • If your dog shows signs of stress or fear when staying alone at home such as barking, whining, soiling
  • If your dog is scared of loud noises like thunderstorms or fireworks
  • If your dog shows signs of stress or fear at home, or discomfort when visitors come to your home

Where to use?

In the room where the dog spends most of its time.

When NOT to use?

  • If your dog’s behaviours are not related to stress, ADAPTIL will not help.
  • If your dog’s behaviours are due to a lack of proper training (e.g. hyperactivity, over-excitement), ADAPTIL will not help.
  • If your dog’s behaviours are due to a lack of stimulation in the environment, ADAPTIL will not help.
  • If your dog is house soiling due to a lack of toilet training or due to medical reasons, ADAPTIL will not help. It is important to consult a veterinarian to rule out any potential medical issues in your dog.
  • ADAPTIL will not help and should never be used in case of aggression towards humans or other dogs. In such situations, we strongly recommend consulting your veterinarian or a veterinary behaviourist.

Use ADAPTIL Diffuser

Where to plug?

  • In an electric socket with a minimum clear distance above the diffuser of 1.20 m (4 ft)
  • (The oily vapour carrying ADAPTIL rises in a column of warm air above the Diffuser)
  • In an outlet of its own

Where NOT to plug?

  • To avoid blocking the diffusion do not plug:
    • behind a door
    • underneath furniture
    • in any socket without 1.20 m (4 ft) clear above it
  • In a powerboard
  • With an adaptor
  • With an extension lead

How many do I need?

One Diffuser covers an area up to 70m².
You may require several Diffusers for a large home, or for a multi-storey home.

How long will it last?

  • One Refill vial lasts up to 30 days
  • It is recommended to replace the Refill every 4 weeks, even if  a small amount of liquid remains in the vial
  • One Diffuser plug lasts 6 months. Renew the Diffuser every six months to ensure optimum effect

How fast will it work?

It takes 24 hours for the Diffuser to heat up and diffuse at optimal capacity, and for the pheromones to fill the room.
For situations that can be anticipated like fireworks, you should plug in the Diffuser 2-3 days in advance.

Should I unplug at night?

Don't unplug or switch off the diffuser at night. The Diffuser is designed to be left on all the time.

Switching the Diffuser on and off may lead to the wick crystallising which may cause the product to stop working.

Is it compatible with other systems?

  • ADAPTIL Refills should never be used with another plug-in device such as an air freshener or insect repellant.
  • ADAPTIL Diffusers should never be used with another refill.
  • ADAPTIL Diffusers come with a plug that fits with the local electric systems of the country it has been bought from. They cannot be used in a country with another voltage. They should never be used with an adapter or a voltage converter as it may lead to serious safety issues. Please check before use that your Diffuser has the appropriate plug to be used in your country.

Can I recycle it?

The Refill vial is made from recyclable plastic materials (PET). The Refill cap is made from polyethylene (PE). These are generally recyclable materials but please check with your local recycling provider as to whether  these materials are acceptable for recycling.

What is the use by date?

The Refill vial has an expiry date printed on the side of the label.  We recommend to replace the electric Diffuser plug after 6 months of continuous use.

Learn about ADAPTIL Collar

How does it work?

ADAPTIL is a synthetic copy of the dog appeasing pheromone, which is the signal of security and comfort for dogs and puppies. ADAPTIL Collar releases these pheromones to help dogs feel reassured and relaxed in all challenging situations.

How fast will I see results?

A lot of dog owners start to see results within the first 7 days with their dog.
However, every dog is unique. Depending on how long the signs have been present and how severe the signs may be, it may take longer to see effects. We recommend using ADAPTIL Collar for at least one month.

How long should I use it?

Many dogs will benefit from the permanent use of ADAPTIL Collar to create a reassuring environment at home and even outdoors. The minimum recommended duration is one month.

When to use?

  • To comfort your dog constantly, at home and even outdoors
  • If your dog is scared of loud noises like fireworks or thunderstorms
  • If your dog shows signs of fear or stress when staying in a kennel (barking, whining, pacing...)
  • If your dog shows signs of fear or stress when out for walks
  • If your dog shows signs of fear or stress when training

      For puppies specifically:

  • Puppy socialisation
  • If your puppy shows signs of fear or stress when training

Where to use?

The collar should be around your dog’s neck at all times.

If you are shampooing your dog, or your dog is swimming in a swimming pool, you should remove the collar first, then replace once your dog is dry.

When NOT to use?

  • If your dog’s behaviour is not related to stress, ADAPTIL will not help.
  • If your dog’s behaviour is due to a lack of proper training (hyperactivity, over-excitement), ADAPTIL will not help.
  • If your dog’s behaviour is due to a lack of stimulation in the environment, ADAPTIL will not help.

Use ADAPTIL Collar

How to use?

  • Place a finger in the plastic loop situated in the inside of the collar close to the buckle
  • Using this loop pull the thin plastic to uncoil the collar
  • Fasten the collar
  • Place over your dog's head to fit loosely around the neck
  • Tighten the collar to fit snugly with your dog’s skin
  • You should be able to place no more than 2 fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck
  • Ensure the collar is fixed inside the buckle
  • Cut off the excess portion of the collar
  • When ADAPTIL Collar comes in contact with the dog’s skin, the dog’s body temperature warms the collar and promotes the diffusion of pheromones into the local environment
  • The collar should remain on the dog at all times (except during shampooing or swimming in a swimming pool)

How NOT to use?

  • Do not put another collar or a bandana between ADAPTIL Collar and your dog’s skin, as it will block the contact and therefore inhibit the release of pheromones.
  • Do not put the collar in contact with shampoo or chlorinated water (in a swimming pool). If you dog is swimming in the sea or lake just one time with the collar, it is ok to keep the ADAPTIL Collar on.
  • Do not fix a lead on the ADAPTIL Collar, as it would not resist the tension and would fall off.

What size do I need?

ADAPTIL Collar size S is recommended for puppies and dogs up to 15 kg

ADAPTIL size M/L is recommended for dogs up to 50 kg

How long will it last?

One Collar lasts 30 days.
It is recommended to replace the collar every 4 weeks, to ensure continuous reassurance to your dog.

How fast will it work?

  • ADAPTIL Collar will start diffusing pheromones immediately upon being fitted to your dog
  • Be sure to adjust the collar properly
  • Check regularly to ensure a proper fit (if the collar is too loose, it will not be warmed enough by your dog’s body heat)

Short hair versus long hair?

The diffusion of pheromones has been tested on 70 dogs with various hair lengths: short, medium, long. Hair length has no impact on diffusion.

Is ADAPTIL Collar recyclable?

No, the collar is not made of recyclable plastic material. It should be disposed of with general waste.

Can I use ADAPTIL Collar intermittently, or only when needed ?

You should leave the Collar around the dog’s neck at all times for one month once the sachet has been opened.

Your dog will benefit by constantly being exposed to the pheromone. If you remove the Collar, the pheromone will still be released but at a lower rate (even when kept at a low temperature (i.e. in the refrigerator) and the efficacy of the collar may be affected (it is impossible to quantify how long the collar will remain effective). The 4 week efficacy cannot be ascertained.

ADAPTIL safety

For dogs and puppies

Trials have been conducted to ensure the ADAPTIL products are safe for dogs and puppies. Since it was developed, ADAPTIL has been used for millions of dogs worldwide. There is no minimum age for using ADAPTIL, puppies are able to perceive the pheromone released in the environment and will respond accordingly. If you experience any issues please contact your veterinarian.

For humans

When used as directed, the pheromones contained in ADAPTIL are safe for use around humans. The product may irritate eyes, nose, throat and skin. Avoid inhaling spray. If skin contact occurs wash your skin thoroughly with soap and water. If eye contact occurs wash immediately with water. If irritation persists consult your doctor.

The pheromone used in ADAPTIL is specific to dogs and cannot be detected by humans. The electric Diffuser plug complies with Australian and New Zealand electrical safety standards. The plastic materials used are self-extinguishing (V2 grade).

When the Diffuser is used continuously, we recommend changing it every 6 months for the best results.

For cats

The pheromone in ADAPTIL is specific to dogs and is not detectable by cats. If you experience any issues please contact your veterinarian.

For cage birds

Some caged birds are known to have sensitive respiratory systems (in particular Psittacines: parrots, budgerigar, etc). Therefore, if you are using ADAPTIL Diffuser, as a precaution, we recommend plugging in the Diffuser in a different room. For further recommendations or information, we recommend consulting your veterinarian.

For aquarium fish

The pheromone in ADAPTIL is specific to dogs and is not detectable by fish.

But as for any in-home Diffuser, if you are using the ADAPTIL Diffuser, as a precaution, we recommend plugging in the Diffuser in a different room.

If the dog spends most of their time in the room with the aquarium, we recommend using an outlet as far from the aquarium as possible. This is only a precaution to avoid oily, diffused active ingredients settling on the surface of the water. The components themselves are not classified as toxic for the environment. For further recommendations or information, we recommend consulting your veterinarian.

Resolve Diffuser issues

How to check proper function of the Diffuser?

When plugged into an outlet, the diffuser will get slightly warm, indicating it is working properly.

The Diffuser is warm

The diffuser contains a heating element that diffuses the product, so is designed to be warm to the touch.

The level of liquid is not going down

The diffusion of the liquid from the Diffuser is a very slow process. In normal conditions of use, it is difficult to see any change in the vial over the first week of use. Slight variations will occur depending on environmental conditions.

To make sure your Diffuser is working properly, check that:

  • the wick is not broken
  • the wall switch is switched on
  • the device is  turned on all the time (sometimes an electrical outlet is controlled by a wall switch)
  • finally, try the device in a different electrical socket

Visible mark on your wall or furniture

The pheromone is contained in an oily carrier which rises in a column of warm air above the Diffuser. If this rising air is blocked (e.g. under a shelf, table, furniture) the oil may re-condense and leave a visible mark.

Do not plug the Diffuser under any furniture or object protruding from the wall as it needs a clear distance of 1.2 meters.

Diffuser and air conditioning?

Be careful to plug the diffuser away from the air-conditioner, vents, cold air returns, or exhaust fan.

Diffuser and open windows?

Usage with open windows and doors may result in diffusion at a faster rate. The product may not last the full expected 30 days. In such a case, a different diffuser location should be considered within the house, targeting the area where the dog spends most of its time.
