The way your dog behaves could be a symptom of stress

Being stressed isn't only human. Dogs can feel this way too. It occurs when things don't always go the way they were planned.

WHAT ARE STRESSFUL SITUATIONS FOR YOUR DOG?

Dogs are social animals that, above all, like predictability. They rely on routine and consistent responses in social interactions. Predictability makes things clearer. Change and inconsistency can create anxiety.

The following are situations that can make your dog stressful:

1.

Adoption/settling into a new home

2.

Separation (staying alone at home or in a kennel)

3.

Travelling

4.

Veterinary visits

5.

Social interactions they are worried about without any opportunity to escape

6.

Exposure to new situations and fearful environments (e.g. new people, loud noises, thunderstorms, etc.)

7.

Inappropriate restraint/handling - especially without proper prior acclimation (e.g. grooming, hugging, petting)

HOW DO DOGS EXPRESS THEIR STRESS OR ANXIETY?

If only dogs could talk. They could tell you how they are feeling. They can't of course - well, not in the language we speak anyway. Dogs are in fact constantly trying to communicate with you to tell you how they are feeling. The language they use is with their body, their facial expressions and the noises they make.

And quite often, what they are wanting to say is that they are feeling stressed or anxious , or both. Common behaviours they will use to do this are barking, hiding, scratching, licking and drooling.

7 OUT OF 10 DOG OWNERS HAVE A PET THAT SUFFERS FROM STRESS OR ANXIETY

Stress and anxiety is actually a very common canine condition. Up to 77% of pet owners have a pet that suffers from stress or anxiety. Which means there's quite a high chance that your dog could be suffering in this way.

OTHER SIGNS OF STRESS AND ANXIETY IN YOUR DOG

Dogs have a wide vocabulary of behaviours to show they are feeling stressed or anxious. Other less common signs include trembling, pacing, panting, muzzle licking and defecation or urination. And if your dog is depressed, it may show it with decreased appetite, play and behaviour, or increased sleep and barking at the slightest noise.

ADAPTIL CAN EASE YOUR DOG'S STRESS AND ANXIETY

Adaptil is a scientifically proven product that has been widely used by vets overseas for over 20 years to calm anxious and stressed dogs. It contains a replication of a chemical message that mother dogs emit just after the birth of their puppies.

This chemical message is odourless and cannot be detected by people and other animals but is easily perceived by your dog. It contains a substance called pheromone that comforts puppies as they come face to face with the strange environment of their new world.
